Job Description

The Farm Mechanic/ Broadacre Farm Hand role at Mallee View is a full‑time, hands‑on position supporting the operation of our broadacre cropping enterprise. This role is suited to a capable and experienced individual who takes pride in machinery reliability and understands the importance of keeping equipment running efficiently during key seasonal periods.

The position has a mix of mechanical focus, with responsibility for servicing, maintaining, and repairing a wide range of broadacre farm machinery. You will be required to diagnose and resolve mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical issues both in the workshop and in the paddock, as well as prepare machinery for seeding, spraying, and harvest to minimise downtime.

Alongside mechanical duties, the role requires the ability to be a farm hand and operate machinery e.g. seeder, sprayers, header. Mallee View operates modern machinery fitted with GPS guidance and precision agriculture systems, and this role requires familiarity with the use of GPS technology.

Mallee View is a second-generation, family-owned and operated farming enterprise located at Galga, South Australia. The business has been developed over more than four decades and has built a strong reputation for performance, reliability, and long-term sustainability.

The operation encompasses approximately 38,000 acres and operates a mixed farming system, with a strong focus on broadacre cropping supported by livestock enterprises. Cropping and feed production are central to the business, with grain grown on-farm and integrated into stock and feed systems, allowing full control over quality, timing, and consistency.

Mallee View operates modern, well-maintained machinery and places a strong emphasis on machinery reliability, preventative maintenance, and efficient operations, particularly during seeding, spraying, and harvest. Key Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities

  • Servicing, maintaining, and repairing broadacre farm machinery

  • Diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and basic electrical faults

  • Preparing machinery for seeding, spraying, and harvest

  • Operating machinery during peak periods, including tractors, seeders, sprayers, and harvest equipment

  • Carrying out breakdown repairs in the field when required

  • General farm and workshop maintenance

  • Maintaining a safe, tidy, and organised workshop environment

  • Working closely with the farm team to ensure smooth day-to-day operations

  • The successful applicant will be capable of operating GPS‑equipped machinery, identifying issues with guidance or control systems, and assisting with basic troubleshooting and fault diagnosis to ensure reliable performance in the paddock.

Job Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need to be mechanically capable first and foremost, with solid experience operating farm machinery.

Essential:

  • Proven experience as a farm mechanic or mechanically minded farm hand

  • Strong knowledge of agricultural machinery and equipment

  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve under pressure

  • Experience operating broadacre cropping machinery

  • Strong work ethic and practical, hands-on approach

  • Commitment to workplace safety and machinery care

Desirable:

  • Trade qualification (mechanical or diesel fitting) or equivalent practical experience

  • Previous experience in broadacre cropping systems

  • Welding and fabrication skills

  • HR or MC licence
